How much does a new fence cost? From ornamental fences to wooden fences, RenoQuotes.com has prepared a practical guide which covers the average prices and characteristics of different types of fences.

Ornamental Fences

A classic steel ornamental fence costs approximately $35 to $65 dollars per linear foot and does not require any maintenance prior to having been used for 15 to 20 years. This type of fence is available in a wide variety of colours and models for every taste.

Wooden Fences

For those who hadn’t thought about this possibility, several types of wood could also be used to build a fence. Treated wood, the most popular option, will cost around $30 to $60 per linear foot.

If you’re looking for a more natural look, red cedar is another alternative to consider. Due to the fact that it offers a natural protection against mould and insects, this type of wood is a great option for a fence. Once it has been installed, the fence will require little maintenance and will be very durable. However, it costs about twice the price of regular treated wood.

If you decide to go with a fence that is low-maintenance and is very durable, aluminum could be a good option. This material doesn’t come cheap: it is sold between $42 and $120 dollars per linear foot (sometimes going up to 180$ per linear foot). However, it doesn’t require a lot of upkeep throughout its lifespan (except painting or staining). The price is also justified by the fact that this is the most “unique” model on the market. Available in more than 120 designs, you will probably be the only one in your group of friends and family to have such a sophisticated fence in your backyard.

Other types of low-maintenance materials are also available at a lower cost. One of the least expensive fence materials is PVC. This plastic-based material is available in a wide array of colours and usually comes with a 20-year warranty relating to the maintenance of said colour. The price is around 65$ per linear foot.

For an even lower price, it is also possible to install a chain link fence (also known as a frost fence).

This type of fence can be used around your pool and if you have a very small budget, it is also a good option to use to delineate your backyard. The Frost fence has been quite popular over the past few decades and it remains so due to the fact that it requires little maintenance and is very durable. It is available in two materials: galvanized steel or vinyl-covered metal.

In most cases, a frost fence is about five feet high and starts at approximately $14 per linear foot(for a basic model) or $18 to $25 per linear foot (for a higher-end model). It is also possible to add woven slats to your chainlink in order to improve the level of privacy. This last option is available for $3,50 to $5 per linear foot, depending if the height is 4 or 5 feet.
